Let’s discuss the power of showing up, the significance of being present and utilizing our charisms to carry out God’s work.

Understanding Your Charisms

Charisms, also known as spiritual gifts, are unique talents and abilities given to us by the Holy Spirit. They reflect how the Holy Spirit is actively working in our lives and guide us in discerning our specific roles within the Church. Throughout the previous episodes, we explored the vast array of the 24 individual charisms, acknowledging that each person possesses a distinct combination of gifts.

The Power of Showing Up

The core message of this episode centers around a simple yet powerful truth: the majority of the battle lies in showing up. Just as a journey begins by taking the first step, our spiritual growth and impact on others start when we actively engage with our charisms. It is not enough to be aware of our gifts; we must walk into the room with the knowledge and intentionality of what we bring.

Bringing Jesus and Our Charisms

When we show up with our charisms, we bring Jesus with us. Whether we are called to lead, serve, heal, give, plan, or any other charism, our responsibility is to surrender to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and utilize our gifts according to His will. By doing so, we create an environment where the Holy Spirit fills in the gaps, making the work effortless and guided by heavenly grace. The collaborative effort of showing up, bringing Jesus, and using our charisms is where the true magic of the Holy Spirit occurs.

Navigating Uncertainty

Sometimes, we might feel uncertain about how our charisms fit into our current season of life. However, it is essential to let go of anxiety and trust in God’s providence. Our primary focus should be to walk into the rooms and situations that God has placed us in, fully aware of the gifts we carry. By remembering that we are never alone and that these charisms are God’s divine empowerment, we can navigate uncertainty with confidence and trust in His plan.

Showing up with our charisms is an essential step in fulfilling our roles within the Church and building God’s kingdom. By being present, bringing Jesus, and utilizing our unique gifts, we become instruments of the Holy Spirit’s work in the world. So, let us embrace the call to show up, knowing that with each step we take, we are empowered by God’s grace, guided by the Holy Spirit, and inspired to make a significant impact on those around us.

Jill Simons:

Hello and welcome to Charisms for Catholics. My name is Jill Simons and I’m the executive director at Many Parts Ministries, where we equip the Body of Christ by helping people learn about and discern their charisms, which is really another word for spiritual gifts. When you discern your charisms, you’re able to see how the Holy Spirit is already active in your life and where he is inviting you to further build the Church. Let’s dive in. So we have just completed our very long, but hopefully very helpful series on all 24 of the individual charisms. If you listen to every single one of the 24, God bless you. You are deeply dedicated. If you just picked and chose the ones that applied to you, no shame.

Jill Simons:

I probably would have done the exact same thing. It is totally fine as long as you’re getting an understanding of what it is that God wants you to do. That is really what it comes down to, is are you giving yourself the tools you need to be receptive to what the Holy Spirit is doing in you? And so this episode is going to be probably pretty short and sweet and just simply talking about what’s next. Okay, so this is my charism. What do I do with that information? And I think that the crux of the issue is something that my father very lovingly drilled into my head. If that’s a thing you can do lovingly, no. I’m very thankful for this lesson that I learned from my dad all through my childhood, and especially this came to the surface a lot navigating college. He said that the majority of the battle is just showing up and there are variations on the theme phrased differently at different times, but the majority of the battle is just showing up.

Jill Simons:

You don’t get anywhere when you aren’t even present, when you don’t even put yourself out there to be able to do the thing that you’re being asked to do. And so when people talk about, I know my charisms now, I’m interested in being more active in them, that’s fantastic. And there are concrete ideas and things like that that you can do to test them out or grow them. And that is all gone into extensively in “The Essential Handbook on Living Your Charisms”, which I’ll link in the show description and you can purchase on Amazon or purchase on our website. But the main thing that everyone needs to do is just show up with your charisms, walk into a room and know that that’s what you’re bringing with you. That’s an episode we did way back before we started the individual charisms series was about knowing what you bring into a room and that’s really what it comes down to. But you have to also walk into the room and that’s what this episode is about. You don’t have to know exactly everything you’re going to teach today or every person you’re going to encourage or all of the wise decisions you need to make.

Jill Simons:

You just need to show up to the life and vocation that the Holy Spirit has invited you into and know that those tools are what you have in your tool belt and you are going to be effective and spirit filled in the vast majority of situations. If that is how you approach your life, just show up and bring the Holy Spirit with you. Make him present in you by intentionally knowing what you bring into the room, by intentionally knowing that you are there to lead or serve or heal or give or plan or whatever your charisms are. It doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter what your charisms are. What matters is that you show up knowing what they are and surrendered to using them in whatever way the Holy Spirit is asking you to use them. That’s the whole gig. I designed a piece for my lifestyle brand a couple of years ago that just said, show up and bring Jesus.

Jill Simons:

That’s the gig. It is. That’s the whole gig. But so often we forget that he’s coming with us. We forget to show up and we forget to name what we’re bringing with us. And then you’re kind of just doing stuff. You’re not really living the Christian life with the level of intention that the Holy Spirit is inviting you into. Because as we know, if you bring any one of those three pieces, you’re doing well.

Jill Simons:

Better than a lot of people are doing in the spiritual life. If you’re aware that you need to show up, pray every day, take part in the sacraments, you’re doing good. If you know that you need to bring Jesus, you’re doing pretty good. You know that he is always with you, that you’re walking with Him, you’re doing pretty well. Or if you know what your charisms are and you’re trying to use those to build the Church, you’re doing pretty good. When you combine all three, you show up, you bring Jesus, and you know what you’re carrying. That’s when I don’t like to use the word magic, but it feels appropriate in this situation. That’s when the magic happens.

Jill Simons:

It’s not magic. It’s the Holy Spirit. It looks and feels like magic sometimes because there’s an effortlessness that we experience where it’s not about us. That is 110% my experience with this podcast. That’s so much the experience of Father Mike Schmitz and his Bible in a year podcast when it went viral and just completely blew up. He was telling this story once about how people know, don’t get a big head about having this number one podcast in the religious sphere. And he’s like, Listen, I have had my own podcast where I’ve tried to talk to people for years and years and years. It is the most humbling thing ever.

Jill Simons:

That when I just showed up and read from a 2000, 3000 year old book. That’s when it went viral. It is so clearly obvious that it’s not me. It’s almost laughable. And that’s been my experience of this podcast and this ministry. It is incredibly effortless for me to do the work because I’m using all of my charisms every day and I am making the decision to show up and the Holy Spirit fills in all the gaps and takes care of the rest. And not that we haven’t been without our technical glitches because we have been rife with tech challenges and things like that as we’ve implemented all of the growth that we’ve been experiencing. But the actual work, doing the work, being with the people, seeing the charisms has been effortless because that is showing up and letting the Holy Spirit do his job.

Jill Simons:

So if you have any anxiety about your charisms, any lack of clarity about like, oh, what does this look like in this season of my life, don’t. Just stop it. That’s not the most helpful advice, but stop it. We don’t need to be anxious about this at all. We just need to walk into the rooms that we’ve been given to walk into because of our job, because of our vocation, because of our season in life, and know what we bring with us. And then you are going to be golden in the vast majority of situations. As long as you remember that you’re never walking into a room alone. And what you bring with you is not because you are supernatural and empowered and amazing in and of yourself, but because the God of the Universe, the living God, has seen fit to empower you with these beautiful tools to build his kingdom.

Jill Simons:

As long as you remember that, you’re going to be in good shape. I hope you have the best week ever. Next week we’re going to start our first ever mailbag episode. So if you have questions for a mailbag, I would love you to email me at hello@manypartsministries.com. Just put “Mailbag for Charisms for Catholics” in the subject line. I’d love to answer your questions on episodes of the podcast because if you have a question, it’s very likely that somebody else does too, and then we can all just learn and grow together. I hope you have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you soon.
