Renewing Hope and Embracing Possibility

One of the remarkable aspects of uncovering charisms is the renewal of hope and the embrace of endless possibilities. This discernment process serves as a profound way to guard against hopelessness, as it reveals the valuable contributions that individuals of all walks of life can offer to the Church and the world. It empowers individuals, regardless of their previous perceptions of their usefulness, to recognize that there is much they can still give and contribute.

Sharing the Gift of Charisms

Jill Simons:

Hello, and welcome to Charisms for Catholics. My name is Jill Simons, and I’m the executive director at Many Parts Ministries where we equip the body of Christ by helping people learn about and discern their charisms, which is really another word for spiritual gifts. When you discern your charisms, you’re are able to see how the holy spirit is already active in your life and where he is inviting you to further build the church. Let’s dive in.

Jill Simons:

Hello from the 3rd day of the SEEK focus conference. I’m here in Saint Louis all week. Hence, my voice that is, like, a full octave lower than normal because of how many people I have been talking to. And I had originally done my math wrong. I thought I had all my episodes recorded through this week instead of ending last week, And so I didn’t expect to come to you live, essentially, from the focus conference the way that I am now, but I am back in my sweet little Airbnb where I’m staying during the FOCUS conference this year, late at night after a full day of talking to people and enjoying all that the conference has to offer. And my wonderful editor emailed me and said, do we have an episode for tomorrow? And I was like, shoot. I really thought that that episode 53 was coming up this week and not last week. So here we are just kind of last minute recording something for our episode coming out just a few hours from now.

Jill Simons:

Know. But it actually is a really beautiful opportunity because I didn’t have a a super set topic in mind for this week. And so more than anything, I just wanna share some of my impressions from seeing over 10,000 definitely, probably approaching 20,000 Catholics this week. And I just never stop being amazed at how compelling the holy spirit is in each and every person and how much when you encounter a new person whether you know them or not, when we’re in this kind of shared Catholic context and know that there’s that relationship with God there, that it’s so clear what so many people have been given and even just meeting people in passing. And one of the biggest things I’ve taken away from this week is really the fact that everything is under control. I think that that’s not a message we hear very frequently. You you kinda stop tuning in to 24 hour news cycle news If the message is everything is under control or if it’s coming out of the mouth of a human being who thinks that human means are gonna be enough To get things under control, that’s a little bit suspect as well. But we’re talking about the Holy Spirit providing for the church in the world right now.

Jill Simons:

And if we really believe that he is doing that, then we know that everything is okay, that there is what the church needs out there in her people. And so much of the work that needs to be done is not running around and fretting and wringing our hands because we don’t have what we need. It’s simply mining the soil that is there for what we need, which has already been placed there. And so talking to thousands of Catholics in college between the ages of 18 and 20, 4 or 5, a lot of the focus missionaries are here as well that I’ve gotten to talk to that are just a year or 2 out of college. I just am so filled with this sense of peace, really, more than anything that everything is as it should be, that the Holy Spirit knows what he is about. And it might have been it might have been a long time since you have heard that from anyone. And so this is kind of a the kind of a pep talk, but with the energy of the opposite of a pep talk where you can calm down. It is okay to relax and allow the Holy Spirit to provide because he is providing right now through the people that he is forming and activating.

Jill Simons:

And what we really need to be aware of is just cooperating with that mining process, with cooperating with uncovering what it is that the holy spirit has placed there for us to find. I’m reminded of, exhibit at one of the children museums that my children love where there is a huge sandbox essentially and and different things hidden in it. And there is very little for the kids to get excited about that in that exhibit if they never look for the things that are hiding there. And I think that we see a similar thing happening within our faith lives. A lot of times, we will have the perception that there’s not really much to dig for within kind of your average, maybe youth ministry program or confirmation class or, faith formation thing that’s being offered for families or young adults or something like that. And there’s this kind of erroneous perception that there’s not that much to dig for here that that it’s very simple and surface level in Jill a boring way. Like, oh, just trust god more and do the things, have the sacraments, and kind of check the boxes, when in actuality, there’s really this thrill that we’re invited into when we get to hunt for what it is that he has placed there for us to find. And, of course, in ourselves, that is our charisms, this ability to uncover those hidden gems that the holy spirit has placed in us that are ultimately going to be our primary tools to build the kingdom of god.

Jill Simons:

And it’s been wonderful having conversations with so many people this week about their charisms, being able to expose some people to that for the first time and hear the renewed excitement in them That this is a thing that’s in them that they can discover. This is an adventure that they’re being invited to go on. And That has just filled me, like I said, with just this renewed sense of adventure myself, but also this profound sense of peace that as long as we are inviting people into this, into paying attention and looking for what the Holy Spirit is doing, then we know that we are going to have what we need. And so I just encourage you more than anything this week to share this concept of charisms with the people in your life that would that it would activate, the people that it would renew that sense of adventure in, that sense of excitement, that sense of possibility. Someone today told me, It seems like this is just a really profound way to defend against hopelessness. I thought that was so beautiful because that’s very true. It has been the discernment processes of the elderly and the incarcerated that I have been most taken with this year, watching these people who maybe the worldly perception or perhaps even their own perception prior too learning about charisms was that they were not particularly useful. There was not that much that they were bringing into the church or the world as a whole.

Jill Simons:

But in actuality, there is much to be given still by by all people. There’s a piece that we are here selling at the conference that says, if you’re still breathing, it’s not too late. And isn’t that so true of all of us? It doesn’t matter what we’ve already done. It doesn’t matter What has gone before, it matters what we choose to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to do next. And so I encourage you, if you haven’t really dove into your own discernment process, that that’s a great thing to pick up here at the beginning of the here I also encourage you if you are one that likes to do the word of the year, consider having a word be adjacent to one of the charisms that you’ve discerned, something to really bring that to into focus in this year of 2024. And, also, just to encourage you to share this with those people in your life who are hungry for that renewed sense of adventure and discovery with the Holy Spirit because it really does bring life and hope in a very unique and beautiful way that I have gotten to experience so profoundly this week. Thank you so much for being with me on the podcast today. We’ll be back to a regular meteor episode next week and all the weeks following it.

Jill Simons:

But I really appreciate your continued listening and support. And as always, if you have been if this is your 1st episode or if you’ve been a longtime listener, Please do take a minute to rate and review the podcast.
