What spiritual gifts do I have? What a great question! The Holy Spirit gives every baptized person the seven gifts (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord). Confirmation also stirs these up. However, other spiritual gifts called charisms are also given to each baptized person.

What is a charism

Charisms are, thus, special and specific abilities or graces given by the Holy Spirit to a baptized individual. The word “charism” comes from the Greek term “charisma,” which means “favor” or “gift.” The Holy Spirit bestows charisms to empower believers for various forms of ministry and service, contributing to the growth and edification of the Church.

Charisms, or spiritual gifts, are distinct from natural talents or skills, as they are considered supernatural in nature and are intended for the specific purpose of building up the Body of Christ. God freely gives these gifts. Personal efforts do not acquire nor earn these.

How many

Every baptized person has at least one charism or spiritual gift, but most people have around three. More can always be given but this is dependent upon a person’s relationship with the Holy Spirit. There are 24 charisms that can be mixed and matched in many ways to make up an individual. The charisms are writing, craftsmanship, encouragement, giving, helps, music, prophecy, discernment, service, administration, knowledge, pastoring, wisdom, faith, leadership, teaching, intercession, celibacy, evangelism, hospitality, healing, voluntary poverty, mercy, and missionary. Finally, how can you find out what spiritual gifts you have? A great place to start is prayer and looking at what you are drawn to in life. To be more specific, you can take our charism assessment. This will tell you exactly which charisms you display in your life and give you a better understanding of how they work.
